In the past, numerous Aadhaar holders were required to visit physical Aadhaar Seva Kendras for even minor corrections, such as name spelling adjustments, address changes, or date-of-birth alterations. Now, UIDAI has made online services more efficient through the official Aadhaar website and the enhanced Aadhaar mobile application. With this digital initiative, residents can log in using their Aadhaar number and an OTP sent to their registered mobile number. After logging in, they can upload scanned copies of necessary documents and submit update requests without the need to visit a center. This initiative not only saves time but also alleviates congestion at Aadhaar offices.
Another important update pertains to Aadhaar fees. UIDAI has modified the fee structure for both demographic and biometric updates. Demographic updates, such as corrections to address or name, incur a minimal service fee, whereas biometric updates—including fingerprint, iris, and photograph updates—are now set at a slightly higher rate. This adjustment aims to uphold the quality of biometric equipment and enhance service delivery. To assist young Aadhaar holders, UIDAI has eliminated biometric update fees for children. This is particularly crucial as a child’s biometric data evolves with growth. UIDAI advises biometric updates at two significant age intervals: once between 5 and 7 years, and again between 15 and 17 years. These updates are entirely free, encouraging parents to ensure they are completed promptly.
To raise awareness regarding child biometric updates, UIDAI has initiated awareness campaigns and behavioral initiatives. Many children still possess Aadhaar numbers created when they were under 5 years old, which lack biometric data. Without updated biometrics, these Aadhaar numbers may fail to function for essential services such as school admissions, scholarships, government benefits, or bank verifications. The new initiative seeks to educate families on the importance of timely updates.
Aadhaar security has also been enhanced with the introduction of new offline verification features. This approach enables hotels, offices, event organizers, and service providers to verify an individual’s Aadhaar information without accessing personal data or connecting to the Aadhaar database. It aids in preventing identity misuse while safeguarding privacy. Residents can download an offline Aadhaar XML file and share it for verification without revealing sensitive information like their complete Aadhaar number.
Another significant update is the new Aadhaar app, which features a more streamlined interface and enhanced user experience. The app enables users to modify demographic details, review Aadhaar authentication history, lock or unlock biometrics, download their Aadhaar, and create a masked Aadhaar.
