Pradhan Mantri Anusuchit Jaati Abhyuday Yojana
The Pradhan Mantri Anusuchit Jaati Abhyuday Yojana (PM-AJAY) is a centrally funded program initiated by the Government of India, operating under the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment (MSJE). Its purpose is to promote comprehensive socio-economic growth for communities belonging to the Scheduled Castes (SC). This scheme consolidates and integrates several previous programs to ensure a more cohesive, efficient, and needs-based distribution of benefits.
A primary aim of PM-AJAY is to eliminate poverty within SC communities by generating additional employment and livelihood opportunities. This is achieved through a combination of skill development programs, support for income-generating schemes (IGSs), and assistance in asset creation. Beneficiaries, particularly SC households living below the poverty line, may receive help in the form of subsidies or grants to establish small businesses, acquire livelihood-related assets, or receive training in skills that meet national standards.

Another significant goal of the scheme is to enhance living conditions and guarantee equitable access to essential services in villages predominantly inhabited by SC populations. Through the “village development” component, villages with a high concentration of SC residents are transformed into “model villages” referred to as Adarsh Gram. These villages are equipped with vital infrastructure and services, including drinking water, sanitation, roads, housing, education, and more, to reduce disparities and ensure that everyone has the opportunity to lead a dignified life.
To bolster education, particularly for SC students from remote or underserved regions, the scheme encompasses the construction and renovation of hostels and residential facilities. These hostels offer accommodation, enabling students to pursue their schooling or higher education without being impeded by distance or inadequate facilities. This initiative contributes to increasing literacy rates and encouraging educational engagement among SC youth.

Through its holistic strategy — merging income generation, infrastructure development, and educational support — PM-AJAY seeks to achieve sustainable social inclusion and enhanced living conditions for SC communities. By tackling various dimensions of deprivation, the initiative provides a means for marginalized groups to surmount systemic disadvantages. Over time, better access to stable employment, education, vital services, and upgraded village facilities can promote increased dignity, opportunity, and equality.
